William Lewis (Interview
featured on A Man's World, January
3,
2006)
Unless
you've been through it, you cannot imagine what it's like for
the thousands
of people in New Orleans, who lost everything
thanks to hurricane Katrina. But one person who can understand
what they're going through is William Lewis — a former homeless
man who got his life back together, while scraping to get by in "The
Big Easy." Listen in as he shares his poignant and searing
lyrical prose of his years spent homeless on the streets of America.
Now a successful
high school teacher and author who still lives in Louisiana,
Lewis has made it his mission to explain to the rest
of us just how tenuous our hold on "the good life" really
is. A unique and timely guest, he'll reveal:
Why
the devastation in New Orleans may finally make America realize
that millions of hard-working people are one missed paycheck —
or one natural disaster — away from homelessness.
What
it's really like for the refugees who are struggling for a small
taste of normalcy — like the group of 32 evacuees living
in a high school gym by night, who are being taught by Lewis during
the day.
The amazing story of how he was finally able to pull himself
up from homelessness to become an accomplished writer, teacher
and poet and wonderful contributor as a model, leader and teacher
of some of our most at-risk kids.
